The Ghats of Varanasi mostly in Uttar Pradesh province are a series of steps going down to the Ganga River. They are an important religious and cultural center as there are about 88 ghats, that are different from each other by history and function. In particular, such ghats as Dashashwamedh, Manikarnika, and Assi attract crowds of people. Another renowned site of Dashashwamedh Ghat which is popular for Ganga Aarti, a ritual of fire, and chanting session. As many people do not get their ashes immersed into the river, Manikarnika Ghat is the one of the main cremation grounds, which reflects the concept of the Hindu’s ideas about the endless circle of life and death. A little away from the main city, Assi Ghat is more wherever pilgrims and tourists like to hang out; the environment is rather serene. Spirituality, tradition and the daily workings of the city are displayed on the ghats through the temples, palaces, and markets, that are minutes from one another. The ghats are also places of festivals, rituals and social events and therefore are the essence of Varanasi as the centre of the religious and cultural activities.
